The R&D program for the Hull Vane carried out so far is as follows:
  • CFD analysis to assess the feasibility of the Hull Vane on merchant ships;
  • Model tests for the purpose of verifying and extending the results of the CFD calculations;
  • Finite element calculations to analyze the strength and stiffness of the construction of the Hull Vane;
  • Development of a mathematical model for the prediction of the Hull Vane performance at full scale and on different types of aft bodies;
  • Open water tank tests with the Hull Vane;
  • Model tests in waves to analyze the dynamic loads and performance of the Hull Vane in a non-static condition;
  • Model tests in ice to determine the loads on the Hull Vane in ice-covered waters;
  • Model Tests with different types of vessels.
  • The following is subject to research in the near future:
  • Concept development for new build vessels;
  • Full-scale application and monitoring.
