In this early stage our focus is on optimizing the two dimensional geometry of the stern area. This two dimensional approach is supported by previous research which has shown that the flow along the buttocks of pram type ships is fairly two dimensional. To aid optimization, a parametric aft body model was developed where the geometry can be altered based on (among others) buttock steepness, transom submersion and buttock shape. The influence on the resistance of these different variables is evaluated by our RANS solver. Several search, modelling and optimization techniques are implemented to find the parameter settings that result in minimal resistance. Results and trends from this approach are used as a basis for three dimensional hull design. The same procedure has also been used to optimize Hull Vane positioning and geometry.
