Following the CFD calculations we performed for a 16.5 m Lemsteraak, reported elsewhere, we carried out an optimisation study for the leeboards of such a vessel, for one of our clients. Several design aspects were analysed, such as profile shape, planform and span. The analysis was carried out using CFD calculations, with and without free surface effects. Apart from this study we have also studied new ways of constructing leeboards in order to increase their strength. The pressure distributions (for the non free-surface case) on the low- and high-pressure side of one of the leeboards studied are shown.
