The first phase development of a so-called Dynamic VPP for the analyses of the tacking, gybing and (starting) manoeuvres of sailing yachts was completed late in 2002. The Netherlands Government provided a subsidy for this work. Initial simulation of the tacking performance using different rudder angle algorithms revealed a significant difference in the overall tacking performance. We will be developing this tool further in 2003. We expect to make good use of this new tool in our design work in the years to come.
