Roll Stabilisation

Heesen Yachts asked us to carry out a research program regarding the efficiency of zero-speed stabiliser fins.

Model tests were carried out at Marin with a model of the Heesen Yachts yard number 13350, equipped with and without bilge keels and stabiliser fins.

The research program resulted in a roll-prediction model. We included non-viscous effects by means of a strip-theory method, and viscous effects. For the prediction of the efficiency of the fins, we developed a new mathematical model, based on first principles, including the control-algorithm characteristics and the fin planform.
