Yacht Design and Naval Architecture
From concept design to detailed engineering, Van Oossanen & Associates b.v. have the capabilities and
experience to keep everything in-house. Due to our roles as consultants and specialists, we are also used
to working in large design teams. We can work together with an external stylist of your choice, but we are
also capable of doing this in-house.
These projects typically range from production yachts, both sail and motor, to large one-off super or
mega yachts.
In the area of sailing yachts, we have been involved in the design of small keel boats, skiffs and racing
and cruising yachts up to and well over 50 metres in length. We have also been involved in the design of
motor yachts and commercial vessels ranging from small tender/sportsboats to large custom-built super yachts,
as well as navy patrol vessels.

Performance Analysis and Optimization
Due to our particular expertise in the hydrodynamics area of naval architecture, a large number of projects
are concerned with the design, or evaluation of designs, or hull forms, from the viewpoint of resistance
and propulsion, the behaviour in waves, stability and safety, and/or some other set of requirements.
Experience, computer calculations, computational fluid dynamics and model testing play an important role
in dealing with such design-related projects.
Other projects are associated with the optimization of appendages for different types of ships and yachts.
For ships and motor yachts these include bilge keels, stabilizer fins, shaft lines, rudders, bow and stern
thruster openings, transom stern wedges, etc. For sailing yachts these projects often address the
optimization of keels and rudders, particularly when the subject vessel requires a shallow draft capability.

Dynamics
Computational Fluid Dynamics
Computational Fluid Dynamics is now reaching maturity. Using CFD, we are capable to compute the hydrodynamic
and aerodynamic flow fields around ships and yachts and analyze them in much greater detail than was ever
possible before. The evolution of CFD offers us a tool towards a greater understanding of flow phenomena,
such as pressure drag, thrust deduction and induced drag, to name a few.
RANSE solvers with a free-surface capability, are now able to not only rank various design alternatives
correctly, but, unlike commonly used panel and potential-flow methods, also come close to predicting the
flow and flow-generated forces in an absolute sense correctly.
At Van Oossanen & Associates b.v. we use the FINE/Marine CFD system, consisting of the Numeca Hexpress grid generation software and the ISIS-CFD RANSE solver developed by Ecole Centrale de Nantes (ECN).

Seakeeping
and Stability
Seakeeping and Stability
In the area of the seakeeping of yachts and ships, and in particular the topic of roll-stabilisation at
anchor of large motor yachts, we have considerable experience. Due to tank testing projects with most
of the common configurations (such as bilge keels, stabiliser fins, active rudders, trim tabs and
gyroscopes) and a sound theoretical basis, we have the capabilities to predict which method of
stabilisation is most suitable and effective for the particular vessel, early in the design process.
We also have a vast experience in the assessment and evaluation of the stability of motor yachts and
sailing yachts. We have experience with all of the common stability rules and regulations (IMO, MCA,
ISO, etc.) and have been involved in the development of some of these methods, such as the ISO STIX
method, and are still part of a number of working groups, regarding the development of stability
criteria.

Structural and Detailed Engineering
Structural design is done in-house for most projects. We have a vast experience in steel, aluminium and
composite materials, ranging from glass-reinforced polyesters to advanced carbon-epoxy materials.
We have experience with most of the usual classification society rules and guidelines. We are fully aware of the conflicting demands between having a yacht certified to the most demanding of rules, while having to also meet a strict weight limit.
Besides being capable of designing a strong, stiff and safe construction, we can also "think"
along with the yard, and help to optimize the production process and efficiency, without comprimising
the lifespan of the yacht.

in the Benelux countries and Switzerland. Both software packages are products of Formation Design
